The title of the first song says it all. “Fuck Your Values, Fuck Your Beliefs” is a nihilistic eight minute long out of control piece with rolling guitars, super electric but smeared riffs that go from the mid tempo of half the song to groove oriented (but disguised by lo fi production) to the hyperfast pace of the first half and the rotten and raw vocals of To. Yes, he just goes by To. Not sure what that is about, but regardless, to make such a long song, as a two piece, and by approaching with a sound that is totally stripped down to their beliefs and the couple of chops they exhaust here, is a deed worthy of applause. Yes, it’s surprising how good and solid some of these songs are. And how, groove-laden they get, because Avsky keep it colorful not by changes in texture or any artificial enhancements, but by expressing their pure hate (“Loathe”, “Cleanse the World”) and by offering up riffs that owe as much to their sloppy musical skills as they do to their old school influences.

Many of the older most important black metal bands (bit of Burzum, two spoonfuls of Darkthrone, a quarter cup of Bathory…mmmhh…the ingredients go on and on) get covered in Malignant. Well, sort of. Obviously you can’t come to this party expecting originality or even a groundbreaking vision. But for those knowing what to expect Avsky won’t disappoint. Their grim factor is way up there with the champs; the frost bitten vocals and cold steam out of mouth ever present with every indistinguishable syllable. The menacing throat slashing guitars advancing with such confidence, that regardless if it’s at the general mid tempo pace of most of the album or the anarchic rapidness of “False Heavens” only one thing is assured, the last thing that matters are your values and your beliefs.
