BEFORE THE RAIN
...One Day Less
(Major Label Industries)

Portugal’s Before the Rain are quite the grim affair. There is not one iota of light in this recording. It’s bleakness  all around, enveloping and developing through lethargic tempos and tired harmonies …One Day Less does the suicidal trick just fine. This of course, should not surprise anyone happy to navigate in doom-laden waters. Like many before them, Before the Rain plays a style developed and perfected during the late 80’s and late 90’s by the likes of Katatonia, My Dying Bride and others. That’s not to say that this quintet sounds like a tribute band, or that they incorporate violins and cellos in hopes to deliver by ways of orchestration even more melancholic music. To their credit Before the Rain resorts to nothing but their own skills and as a consequence the totally depressing titled …One Day Less does not sound like much of a struggle.

The most variation is offered by vocalist Carlos D’Agua, who at times has this quasi romantic gothic edge, the dude sounds like an elegantly dressed cavaleiro perhaps leather-clad perhaps riding a white horse through giant mountains in heavy weather. D’Agua has got the skills, he can growl like the best of ‘em and when he does Before the Rain grows with him. The perfect example of what this band is capable of is the title track; a seventeen-minute long mammoth positioned at the tail end of this debut. There is some light to it, the mid tempo final culmination of swirling guitars isn’t necessarily upbeat but shows a somewhat more uplifting side of the band that seems to hint that these guys may not regret to live one more day after all.
