CORPUS CHRISTII

Rising
(Moribund)

Portuguese black metal powerhouse one man band Nocturnus Horrendus might have a funny name, but as Rising attests, his black metal ain’t no laughing matter. Especially those riffs; they are so thin and slay so fast they’d be perfect for decapitation.  There would be no pain involved, just a quick smooth cut which would probably go against Satanism, which I assume must involve at least sixty six minutes of torture before decapitation, but the riffs are killer all the same.  And that seems to be what is all about for Corpus Christii as Horrendus keeps his songs traditional, with fast riffs and double bass drums that explode with such bombast the whole thing sounds very much like war. For an example of this check out the first minute and a half of “The Wanderer”, right before the music turns slow Horrendus presents a bleak mid tempo passage that turns mushy with the pulsating acceleration of the drums and the invariable trebly guitar.

Horrendus has been working on Corpus Christii since 1998, and like many black metallers who like to dip their toes in all sorts of blasphemous matters, he has also done the devil’s deed in band’s like Genocide Kommando, Storm Legion, Morte Incandescente, Noctu and Coldness. I know, you might be scratching your head asking whether there are more than 10 mortals on earth who have heard any of those bands. But that is not the point, this depressive and sad sad man isn’t raising the crucifix and cursing God just because in these days of turmoil shit is fucked up. He is a lifer fighting the bad fight.  And in case you haven’t noticed by the black leather, black boots, long hair, corpse paint and goatee Corpus Christii is about religion and that crucifix Horrendus is raising up to the sky proves it. One more thing Horrendus would like us all to know, ‘he is not a nazi’. I know because I just read about it on his MySpace page blog and I was thinking about it when I said that he played for a band called Genocide Kommando, who I am not sure what they are about but judging by their name it would be easy to assume their politics lay on the far right.
