CREATURE FEATURE

The Greatest Show Unearthed
(Sumerian)

This is supposed to be fun. Almost like circus music meets punk rock. Actually, that’s what it exactly is. With a bit of gothic by way of dark make up and songs that would have fit perfectly as the soundtrack to The Nightmare Before Christmas, or The Corpse Bride, which really, I think these dudes watched a few times and decided to make an album around.  The guitars have sort of been minimized which, which truth be told, sorta pisses me off, because I think The Greatest Show Unearthed loses a few pounds because of that. To make up in girth and balance things out Creature Feature is heavy on keyboard and synth work. It’s like the old bearded madman playing behind the backdrop to a bizarre clown sketch. Or like the big and crooked older than fuck lady who’s gone nuts and has decided to spend the rest of her life jamming with fifteen year olds. It can be fun, but it can get tedious. Especially, because the punk, the rock, and the most tenebrous elements of goth are totally absent and have been to a large degree totally replaced by cartoon like imagery and cartoon-like music.

Creature Feature is a two-piece, which is a little surprising considering how big this sounds. In charge of the synth work and sampling is Erik X who for sure has his hands full. Curtis RX is in charge of the guitars and the vocals. So he puts humanity back into Creature Feature. He is a proper singer and his abilities as a guitar player are perhaps a bit tainted, as Erik has pushed his string work to a corner. He is most notable on both fronts (vocals and guitars) during “Buried Alive”, where the band simply finds itself through a greatly whimsical chorus. Creature Feature is supposed to specialize in the macabre, the morbid, the ghoulish and the unfathomable. But that depends on what your idea of each is.
