One
band that has changed very little despite the passage of time
and the increase in body fat is Dismember who in 2008 are
turning 20. While most of their contemporaries have fallen by
the way side or changed with the times these Stockholmites are
still at it adopting AC/DC’s modus operandi of re-recording the
same album time and time again to the general elation of their
fan base. And that is alright. It is what is expected of them,
because once a few years ago they tried changing or
experimenting and ended up sounding a tad foolish. Way wiser
because of the experience, Dismember now offers their
self-titled eight full-length and one thing is evident; the year
could be 1988 and no one would notice.
This is as
tight as an elephant’s ass, which of course we all like.
Dismember are offering what they tag as True Swedish Death
Metal, and what a true statement that is. Because trueness means
you don’t evolve, you stay a Neardenthal. The riffs still have
the sludge-like tonality first created in a dank basement of
Stockholm, so thick and muddy indeed they can’t be pressured
into shifting into third gear. So it is up to the drums to speed
up the process. Musically though, Dismember have progressed,
they are just choosing not to brag about their instrumental
prowess. But how about that NWOBHM guitar tandem escalations in
“Under a Bloodred Sky”? It is almost pretty. That shall
suffice, “Legion” is so blunt and on target it could have been
included in their classics Like An Ever Flowing Stream or
Indecent & Obscene.
