EL CHUPA COBRAS

A few months ago I was nicely surprised by El Chupa Cobras’ demo. So much so that I made a wrong interpretation of the meaning of their name.  The true one only came to mind when I actually took the time to think. Anyway, I gave their demo four sparrows not because it was good but because it approximated brilliance. And this self-titled release confirms it all; it is a nearly flawless mess of exuberant naked discordance. Its songs, through seconds fragment themselves, and yet they all coalesce in the most exciting and orgasmic of manners. This shit is filled with rage the way a KKK rally is filled with idiocy. Better yet, if you are a metalhead and think of noise as too unmetal for it to fill your shelves, well El Chupa Cobras is it. Their take is the corner where the metal clashes so hard with the noise it meshes into one amorphous ball of denim and jagged lead. No leather in sight, yet there are some nice solos here and there that throw a hidden wink to the mulletheads.

What’s most important for the metalheads, there is not fist raising, chest thumping melodies here but El Chupa Cobras sincerely go for the aggression, throwing vicious riffs and curvy sonic paradigms like my stereo is a boat and their music the Bermuda triangle. It is not without a reason that these Alabama boys (and a lady at the bass) cite bands as diverse as the Jesus Lizard, Kiss and Voivod as their influences. From the first they acquire the weirdness, the crazed Yow-like vocals, the frenetic spirit, etc. From Voivod certain progressive flair most noticeable when the band builds robotic passages that are accentuated by Piggy-like guitar mannerisms and from Kiss….let’s hope they get their business sense. Because this kind of music is so good and solid it probably won’t make $10.
