Seize the Time

If you are in search of a fucked-up
time, and I am talking like crazy long let’s trip our balls out
time; meth, suspiciously strong Colombian coffee, Peruvian
flake, circus freaks, Andre the Giant, Japanese Manga, hairy
ladies, mole people and other nutty stuff included; then you
might want to investigate this Philippine band. Emigrated to
the States with all the fucked-up memories of their native
war-torn homeland and carrying over tons of bizarre baggage
their mission is as simple as; ‘to shake us out of our
complacency’. If that’s all they want to do with us, then
mission accomplished, because it takes just one track (any
track) of Seize the Time to seriously run over our sanity
and speed away with our wallets. Truly, Seize the Time is
a test of endurance. If you get past the first four songs total
derangement is guaranteed. And if you get past the 15 tracks
included in this, the band’s second record, mental retardation
awaits you. Get your boxer shorts ready and take a cold bath
‘cause six or seven minutes into this record your neurons will
be fried with so much spazz, grinding guitars, hysterical triple
vocal attack, and herky-jerky hardcore.
This is
controlled chaos at its most expressive, totally excessive and
utterly ridiculous. Thinking about it; it fits the times. And
man, if you are into multi-culturalism and dug foreign
languages; you might have one more reason to spend your cash on
Flattbush. As the band drops lyrics in English, they do not
stray too far away from their cultural roots and spill a few
ones on Tagalog (along with English, Philipine’s co-official
language) and Kapampangan (just one of the thirteen major
languages of their country).
Hints of Patton-esque
school of vocals are clear throughout the album; and even during
the most tamed track, the lounge-y “Community Organizer”; the
vocals come quite close to the former Faith No More vocalist. The clear yet
powerful production of former FNM bassist Billy Gould makes
sense and does the record much justice. As is usually the deal
with bands like this, all the melody and finesse quickly gives
way to grinding speed, but placed right at the middle it
provides for an efficient break. Named after a 60’s
Filipino band that was silenced for their political dissension;
the band’s political lyrics also push the bands a bit towards
the System of a Down camp, but think of Flattbush as a much more
extreme, playful, untamed and just way way way fucked-up band.
