Some
of these songs are awesome. A super rocking version of a stoner
rock band, minus the idiotic residues of becoming a couch
potato. Especially good is the way Gozu starts off the album
with the huge song that is “Meth Cowboy”; it’s fast, it’s
energetic, and it has a great pumped up riff that feeds that
swirling sprinkle of a solo that colorfully blesses this song.
It’s an approach that has been perfected by Queens of the Stone
Age in its last two albums and that it has been perfectly
replicated by Open Hand in their underrated record You and Me.
Gozu, in this cut do it just as good. But is not just the
interplay between guitars and the positive result; it’s the
cocksure fashion with which these Boston foursome pummels and
grooves. It’s a balance act, and a good one at that.
This
self-titled six-songer (without counting the intro “Okuda”)
peeks early, but that’s not to say that what follows pales in
comparison. It’s more like “Meth Cowboy” is such a fantastic
song there is no way to top it. On “Northside” Gozu, vocally
remind me a bit too much of the post Exhorder band Floodgate.
Except this song is much better than anything that band included
in their sole album Penalty. I hate to sound like I am
just throwing off semi-obscure band names around for my own
putrid reference. But Gozu does remind me of a few. And don’t
take that as a weakness. For example; I still am a huge Queens
of the Stone Age fan, but their last album left me quite cold.
Gozu are the blanket that will warm me up then. That’s proven by
“Truth Weighs a Ton”, the light on its feet quick riff, the
wah-wah heavy solo, the calmed semi-whispered vocals. This
shit’s just right. Very fucking right. Looking forward to
hearing more.
