HEX MACHINE

Run to Earth
(Molsook)

Knowing that at one point in time extreme drummer extraordinaire Dave Witte bashed the skins for these Virginians gave them in my ignorant self a bit more credibility. Of course, for credibility in my eyes all you have to do is first exist, then present a decent recording and last make sure the recording makes it to my doorstep in sound form. Not sure if it’s the heat of Florida or a pissed off mailman for carrying too many packages but lately I’ve been receiving plenty of fucked up CD’s. But worry not fine people from Molsook Records, Run to Earth made it just fine, and what’s better, the loud colors that grace the cover made it jump so high in my face this one made it to the top of the pile way faster than programmed.

So from what the little information I could gather Hex Machine have four recordings previous to Run to Earth, which is a four song EP lasting a little over sixteen minutes. The whole thing has the shape of a jellyfish, with the quartet doing its best to craft loud, fuzzy and heavy shapeless songs. Their riffs are the kinds that escape us. You sure can’t snap your fingers to their melodies and you sure as fuck can’t tap your foot to their oblique rhythms. The music is big though, certainly influenced by the less groove laden material of bands like the masterful Melvins or some of the beefiest Amphetamine Reptile back catalogue Hex Machine indulge in some sort of deranged jamming. Somewhere on their MySpace page there is a poster of a show that has them opening for the great Clutch, which is cool and all. Volume-wise Hex Machine shall experience no issues, but rhythm wise I can see some hard head scratching. So hard indeed, there will be blood on the floor and dozens of disappointed melody friendly potheads.
