Peruvian
bands are surging like a desperate and scared phoenix
out of the foggiest most nasally congested city in the
world. Up to a couple of years ago Lima hadn’t had much
to offer as far as heavy music is concerned. Yeah, a few
of their extreme metal combos were ok but elsewhere
there was zero cool and groove. For me, it all changed
once I heard Manganzoides. Those psyche garage rockers
had such a sick vibe and produced such mighty psychotic
rock and roll. Knowing the narrow range of the Peruvian
scene I should have taken them a sign of the things to
come.
Only a couple of weeks ago I was surprised by the
psychedelic masturbation of Serpentina Satelite, a few
months ago it was the turn for doomsters Reino Ermitaño
and now it seems like Peruvians underground rock fans have their very own
Monster Magnet. And I ain’t talking ‘space lord
motherfucker’ kinda shit. I am talking Tab
and the Spine of God. The good stuff. The
excessive drug riddled smoked out blown out.
Listening
to Cosmos Kaos Destruccion, La Ira de Dios’s third
full-length and fourth overall recording, is a total throwback
because even though to this scribe it directly references the
early work of the once mighty Monster Magnet it also manages to
lit a fire in my already burned neurons. I even spilled a few
tears for past’s sake. The aesthetics that are being exploited
here were once planted by Hawkwind, the principal influencer of
Monster Magnet I must add, add to that a proto punk edge and a
spoonful of blues (“Pobre Diablo” especially) and you got this
Peruvian combo.
The formula
is rather simple and not as convoluted as one might think after
a quick spin of tracks like “Velocidad” or “Aburrido”. This is
very energetic jam-friendly greased up hard hitting guitar
driven rock and roll with a fat ass dose of psychedelia, I tend
to call it ‘space debris’, laid on the side. In other words, La
Ira de Dios play stoner rock for the current generation; that
generation that got over bare bones rock and roll, dropped out
and tuned into kraut rock and hard rocking psychedelic jam
bands.
I just had a
brief discussion about the lyrics with a friend of mine. I’ve
always said that I consider lyrics to be the least important
factor of music so I ain’t bothered by the sophomoric writing
featured here. Plus man, have you ever paid attention to the
lyrics from Kyuss or Monster Magnet? Groovy yeah. Dylan-esque
hardly. Then again, fuck Dylan.
