MASSACRE OF THE UMBILICAL CORD / CONTROL

Split
(Magic Bullet)

The whole pig-like at the mike angle club is getting one more member. Massacre of the Umbilical Cord hail from South Carolina and play mostly grindcore. Some of it is pretty lethal. Some of the guitars even come off quite clean, with every chord having its split nanosecond in the spotlight, which is actually great considering that grindcore is one of those genres that at times seems to resent production values. A dude by the name of John Dupre is responsible for the sound.

Anyway, this split contains nine quickies from Massacre of the Umbilical Cord and five songs from the no longer a band (according to the label’s page) Control.   I am not sure why but the first eight songs as well as the last are from the first band with Control getting sandwiched hamburguer style.  By know you know the first’s ilk. Massacre of the Umbilical Cord are the quirky kind of grindcore band, with a skilled vocalist that goes from grandfatherly to Babe on crystal meth often many times within a song.   The band jerks in all directions, with uncontrollable intensity and an insane thirst for carnage. The band plays with consumated skills, but so many other grindsters do it just like them I am wondering if there is a trick to sounding this dexterous.

Control on the other hand hail from North Carolina and offer up a far more interesting take on extreme music. They play hardcore.  Or as the band put it in their MySpace page, ‘hardcore soul’. Far from the chugga friendly of the typical New York hc style Control serves up angular music. At times verging on noise rock and at times experimenting with soaring builds, Control manages to stay furious and pissed through the course of their five songs. Too bad they either quit or the members simply decided to focus on other matters entirely. “Evangelitis” has some excellent momens and interesting arrangements. “Claws Down Nails Up” is a great piece of emotional hardcore; kind like a kick in the groin but not without a tear of repentance and a pat in the back as an apology.
