MOJO JAZZ MOB
Pacific Daybreak
(Swamp Room)

As a huge fan of Kyuss I feel elation every time I hear a band rocking out the vintage Josh Homme’s low tuned riffs with authentic reverence and a bit of invention, I feel like someone is trying to rip me a new asshole every time I hear a band playing desert rock with total lack of identity and zero laidback vibes and I feel like scratching my head in disbelief every time I hear a band playing stoner rock like Germany’s Mojo Jazz Mob.

On one hand this young kraut band shows great chops, which is ultimately what salvages Pacific Daybreak, but on the other, they lack personality and a sound that is even 10% their own on any front. It’s a shame, because these dudes can play, they just don’t show they can write songs without using Kyuss as a mold.  And if the tune in question slightly resembles another band, then it is Queens of the Stone Age that gets the head job. I mean, come on, there is a song called “Autoagression” that couldn’t be a bigger rip off a QOTSA tune; from the riff, to the drumming, to the one note piano key, to the lazy singing. It’s almost too much to take it seriously.

What makes Pacific Daybreak listenable is the playing itself which is beyond competent. The guitars especially, even though generic and totally derivative considering all of the above, have some shining moments especially during the solos. But the vocalist is pretty annoying. This is clearly the type of vocalist that was accepted into the band because he could sing in the same out of pitch John Garcia mode. Except this dude doesn’t have the chops, nor the soul and can’t carry the tunes to save his life. There is a difference between paying homage, being influenced and simply copying. These dudes don’t know what that is.
