If
some of the CD packages that I am getting from overseas are any
indication, the record industry may not be in such shambles. At
least not in Greece, from where this emo melody friendly
hardcore punk band hails. Pretty difficult not to have my review
affected by the look of the digipack; gorgeous artwork and all,
the lyrics are served not in a booklet but in loose pages each
with mock handwriting that outlines the band’s most wholesome
aspirations, ‘I will be waiting for you, there’ll always be
reasons, the comforts of home. But I will be waiting for you. We
are friends for a reason, let’s open the door’. Holy shit, I
am about to cry. But what’s the good of being cynical especially
considering how promising the current times seem to be? All
bullshit aside, we all need a hug from time to time.
And that’s
precisely where Mute the Silence come in; mittens in hand, leg
warmers on legs and donning a smile bigger than Ronald
McDonald’s this Greek quartet makes some pretty decent melodic
hardcore du jour. Some of the playing is top notch, like the
escalating guitars in “Monocratic”, the whole hesitant beginning
of “Pathetic” and many passages here and there. Was Mute the
Silence an American band I could see no obstacles for them to be
some sort of MTV poster boys. Just a little more power, girth
and sheen on the recording and they are grand. Unfortunately,
like their photogenic counterparts Mute The Silence seem to
emulate so accurately Cursed With Ambition is quite
predictable and for an aggressive genre as lethal as a snowball
to the face in the glowing sun of Kefalonia.
