We
must be careful not to lump this veteran Detroit death thrashers
with the current revivalist wave of old school thrash metallers.
That would mean that we are turning a deaf ear to their past.
Nocturnal Fear has in fact been around since the year 2000 and
has plenty of studio experience; starting with their demo (Pagan
Rites, 2001), and following up with two full-lengths (Sterilize
and Exterminate, 2002 and Fog of War, 2005) and one
EP (Line of Fire, 2007) our men in rock city have been
waving the flag of hate for quite a long time.
That’s not to
say that Nocturnal Fear doesn’t drink from that well, because
they sure as all fuck do so and plenty of it. But their kind of
thrash metal certainly looks up in reverence more to Teutonic
masterful ancestors like Destruction, Sodom and Kreator than to
the more comfortable and jumpy sounds created in the Bay Area at
the dawn of the 80’s.
And nowhere is
that more in evidence than in the corrosive voice of Necromodeus;
whose raspy/gargle/gasp of a voice quite frankly could gain him
a spot as the stand in vocalist in one of those European
festivals for either (or all) Mille Petrozza, Tom Angelripper or
Schmier. His voice is great, his angle is ageless, his
pronunciation quite clear. In a way Nocturnal Fear are already
playing timeless metal. That’s also precisely where the
‘death’ in the genre comes from. Because musically Nocturnal
Fear plays some absolutely slaying thrash metal. The chrome
dome six stringer Slave Hunter weaves with much ease riffs that
come off as intricate and textured. His playing is flawless, a
great balance act between aggression and melody. And check the
dude out with those solos, which he makes sure to stamp them
with sense instead of desperation. High quality stuff from
whichever way you hear it. Best song on the album; hands down
“Out of Revenge”. An epic thrash metal song if there ever was
one.
