PEGATAUR
Eternal Flight
(For Once)

A couple of clashing points here; the music is sometimes good and it’s got great potential but the recording is horrible. Eternal Flight sounds like a rough cut, like a rehearsal tape, like a demo that should have sent the band back to the drawing board. I would like to yell; ‘Injustice’ to the top of my lungs because Eternal Flight definitely deserves more punch, a better recording, a bigger mix, more prudent sounds, and a more respectful sonic palette. Whatever it is that could have aggrandized these sounds a bit. Because some of the riffs kill, it’s just that the distortion is minimal and the drums are tiny and when you dish out some metal basics like this California duo does, they simply deserve a better card of presentation. Maybe they should have invested some of the cash that was dished out in the awesome circular insert, into the recording. Then, more people would be paying attention.

Did I say that the insert is awesome? Because it is, in its black and white glory, it features a classic and classy circular design. Whoever created this deserves some accolades.  Plus their logo is very cool. It looks religious and in an aesthetically pleasing way includes every single letter, P.E.G.A.T.A.U.R.

But the songs man, some pay debt to the NWOBHM in a very subtle way and have this classic heavy metal feel. There is only one guitar here, you see, so the songs sound as stripped down as they can be. No kidding, perhaps not in a very in your face way, but the manner in which axeman Eric Murriguez scales up his  guitar’s neck denotes much talent. I am not so sure it’s all being exploited correctly. If this is for show, then show it off, but as it is Eternal Flight is destined to go under the radar. The recording is too crude and the band sounds like is short changing itself by presenting an end product this raw. The promise is there.
