Very
little is known of the underground kiwi rock scene. So
as a sort of novice to this country’s talent I am glad
Red Zone Cuba is my introduction. This band presents
such a dirty and disheveled rock and roll proposition
it’s actually quite refreshing. Especially considering
how much I am used to complaining about clean, safe and
friendly rock and roll bands. Visitors From Another
World, is almost the antithesis of polished
commercial FM radio rock and roll; it’s angry, is loud,
is rough and violent, it moves and stumbles with a
drunken pace, it’s distorted and is not afraid to play
around with other rebel genres like rockabilly and punk.
In short, Red Zone Cuba is the type of band that could
find a nice comfortable home in the awesome world of
Dead Beat records.
Very much
like the principles that reign the b-movie world (check out the
cover artwork), the music of Red Zone Cuba is about taking
matters into your own hands. This is rock and roll based on will
and enthusiasm, it’s about a quick feel, and fast rhythms. It’s
not about hoping to get funds, it’s lo fi because it has no
hopes of making millions and it has no hopes of making millions
because it’s too clever and violent for the masses. The devil
might be in the details but Red Zone Cuba proves that the devil
is just as comfortable in an underground garage.
The songs on
Visitors From Another Planet run quite the gamut but
always stay virulent; from the garage punk blues of “Roll On”
with its obsessive harmonica, belligerent screams and distorted
guitars to what sounds like a Ramones tribute with the
‘1,2,3,4,’ starts off and its ‘gabba gabba hey’
chorus in “Leave It All Behind” and the surf guitars and
non-stop movie samples reminding us that even in New Zealand
someone was listening to the Bomboras and Man Or Astro-man?
