Too
bad that this legendary British anarcho punk band runs
out of gas fairly quickly in this EP. Then again, there
are ten songs in No More Pain, which is actually,
enough to consider it a full-length, but the last half
of it sounds rather tired with the band offering a
pretty unimaginative take on their rudimentary style of
punk.
No More Pain
starts of fully charged and it feature’s the band’s legendary
sound; “A Handful of Dust” perfectly displays the band’s guts
and feelings, one speed and two lines delivered in assertive
fashion a few times,‘I will show you fear, in a handful of
dust’. Need they say more? Not really, No More Pain
boasts all of the album’s lyrics in the back cover alone and
there is enough space to add a few more in just that one side.
It’s also a
very effective approach, to the band’s credit they have
maintained a very uniform sound, No More Pain, not only
is structurally similar to their past albums, but production
wise, it has the same lo fi static-y guitar sound of any of
their early 80’s records. It’s actually refreshing in these
days of polished sheen and sterile edges. Too bad that by the
time we get to the fifth song, the compositions sound dull and
indistinguishable. “The Death of the Author”, “Grave Object” and
“Annihilation” are bright examples of the lack of poignancy of
some of this material. Rudimentary Peni is wise to close off the
album with an instrumental called “Pachelbel’s Canon in E” it’s
sloppy and more melodic than you would expect. It’s Rudimentary
Peni at its swiftest.
Like the
rest of Rudimentary Peni albums No More Pain comes graced
with vocalist Nick Blinko’s black pen and ink artwork. It’s pretty cool stuff
from whichever way you see it. Kinda childish, kinda disturbed
and totally deranged when you see how many lines are drawn into
it.
