To
those already counting themselves as fans of the
sustained low sounds of Sunn0))); their new platter of
low rumbles and long as unemployment lines drones will satiate their
thirst for at least two more years. Then, Sunno))) will
put out a new recording with a cool name like
Monoliths & Dimensions and will offer a slight
variation of the same past recordings. The circle will
be completed when the already fans of Sunno))) will stop
salivating for the following two years.
Or maybe it
is me who doesn’t get it. I want to but I don’t get it. I am not
even sure why I had expectations that there would be actual
structures here. At least structures of the kind I dig. Because
we all know there are structures in the noise of Sunno))). Even
if there aren’t supposed to be any, there are structures. And if
there aren’t any then the vroom vroom rumble of a low note that
goes up and down for sixteen minutes sure counts as one.
If past
releases by this groundbreaking duo were a challenge, then
Monoliths & Dimensions is a monumental comet-size challenge.
Not because it is any more difficult than previous outings but
because it continues to indulge in the same monotone excesses of
before. And we've all had plenty of this before. And where the band sounded groundbreaking a few years
ago, now you’ll need dog hearing to get past these brown notes.
No one is expecting Sunno))) to start sounding like Maroon 5,
but shit man, how bleaker and dense can they get without
repeating themselves? The answer to that is much bleaker and
more dense. To their credit, low rumbles and drone have never
sounded so crisp. The production here is impeccable. But the
music is another matter.
Perhaps I
don’t have the ears for Sunno))), or their albums started to get
old by White 1, but I can only wonder when will be the
next time I’ll feel like listening to this. Certainly, each of
the four movements included here go places, slowly for sure.
There is an
extensive guest list revolving around these dimensions; Oren
Ambarchi, Attila Csihar, Dylan Carlson, Steve Moore and more.
Sure, they are all talented men of extremes, but just like each
and the men of Sunno))) they’ve pummeled in properly in their
past. Not here though. The thing is if music was all about
challenging and making sounds an endurance test then I’d rather
listen to pop music all day long.
