Powerful
is not a word I like to throw around when judging a record
release by Victory. But this band has its merits. In most cases
powerful would still be a bit of an exaggeration; mostly because
California’s The Warriors make the kind of hardcore that gets me
napping faster than a full bottle of barbiturates. But this
sextet is somewhat gracious; more flexible in its approach this
quintet is maker and owner of jumpy vibes and a very
accomplished vocal element. Seriously, if all hardcore bands
could make a song as good, immediate and catchy as “Life Grows
Cold” then who knows, maybe I would have been more of a hardcore
head. Not to offend anyone, but I’d love it if a band as good as
this one embraced a more metallic side and added some guitar
solos. The Warriors would rip asses worldwide then. But yeah,
ok, a few lines lower. I guess I am convinced, Genuine Sense
of Outrage is actually quite powerful.
Plus, any
hardcore band that can get someone as great as Motorhead’s Lemmy
to do a cameo has my eternal blessings. No kidding “Price of
Punishment” is another scorcher. Great melodies, no silly and
formulaic breakdowns, but the gravely voice of Lemmy adding the
chorus and causing me to scratch my head until my scalp bleeds.
My question would be, what did you Lemmy Kilmister saw in these
guys as worthy of your time? The key to The Warriors success is
here; their riffs borrow freely from hard rock. “Destroying
Cenodoxus” has a fantastic quasi stoner feel to it. The vocals
of Marshall Lichtenwaldt are normal in that ‘I hate your
face’ sense of the word but he delivers his lines in a rapid
fire manner instead of the idiotic hammering of most hardcore
heads. To that, let’s add the fact that most songs don’t even
make it to the third minute and what we have is a solid
contender for hardcore album of the year.
