TURBONEGRO

Retox
(Cooking Vinyl)

Yes, Turbonegro has never made a bad album. But at the same time they have never been able to re-deliver a recording with the same nasty attitude, twisted humor and contagious energy as 1989’s super charged and masterful Apocalypse Dudes.  I said it in my review of their previous Party Animals (which appeared in two other sites), and I say it again; only Turbonegro is to blame for setting the bar so high.  Retox, much like Party Animals, suffers the same fate. A few of the tracks are simply lackluster, not only on execution but they suffer of generic songwriting syndrome. The badly placed “Hell Toupee” is perhaps Turbonegro at its most downtrodden and ordinary. Its chorus has as much imagination as the tip of a desk or a piece of white paper. And the same can be said about at least two more tracks from Retox. It’s not all lost though, “No, I’m Alpha Male” has metal written all over Euroboy’s guitars. Like in previous releases Euroboy’s riffs and sparkling solos are invigorating, and at its core are the beating heart of the band. Not many punk bands place as much emphasis on this as Turbonegro, and that may just be the link between Turbonegro and its growing metal fan base.

For the most part though Retox will satisfy the Turbonegro fan. It’s always been the case that Turbonegro’s songs are immediate and Retox has its fair share of rapid hooks and musical ear candy. Hank Helvete’s voice is not only incredibly easy on the ear but is also accessible. The band’s lyrics haven’t changed much; lowbrow humor all around this band remains one of the best foreign/English as a Second Language acts when it comes down to dealing with asses, fake homosexuality, drugs, decadence, destruction  and all sorts of acts and attitudes that are only bound to bring humanity a bit closer to the apocalypse. ‘What is rock!? Rock is the area between the balls and the anus of a dog or a man. What is your rock!? Rock is the possibility of choking in your own vomit in the back of a rapist’s van. What is rock? Denim clad Satanists making love in the sewers of Birmingham during Maggie Thatcher’s prime.’  Few might agree. But when said with this much conviction is hard to argue.  “I Wanna Come” may signify maturity. With the band taking a breather and approaching their rock in a more soulful way. Mid–tempo delivery, classic pop hooks, but go figure. You know that when Turbonegro say ‘come’, they are not asking you to get up and get walking. I am a big fan. For a few years, they were on my Top 10. They have given me the most memorable live experience of my life. And for that I wish I could give them at least 4 sparrows. But in the spirit of objectivity, that won’t happen at least until they come within reaching distance to Apocalypse Dudes.
