Get Loose
(No Way)

Gorgeous vinyl release from the fine chaps at No Way Records. The lucky fellas that have the luxury of seeing their rambunctious latest album pressed onto the real thing are San Francisco’s Warkrime, who basically jot the hardcore down to the skeletical basics. So basic indeed I thought I was hearing a reissue from a 1985 recording.  For such an ignoramus like myself, I immediately thought Convicted by Cryptic Slaughter but I am sure that if you know your hardcore better than I do, then something more underground will spring to mind.  Such is the take, of this young quartet, we really can’t get this type of hardcore out of a current so-called hardcore band with a juice extractor.  Needless to say, as things come to a start Warkrime runs through its songs with sole regard for speed and some pretty smart finger licks of guitarist Pat Shredder. Pay attention to his work on “On The Road” where he goes from melody, to relentless old school hardcore to surf rock without a cynical flinch.

The second side, you actually have to flip the record so it takes more effort, opens up with an instrumental titled “Instrumental“, which sounds just like most of the other hardcore songs included in Get Loose, except without the vocals.  “Witch Hunt” and “Leader” follow the only formula Warkrime knows, and you know what, that’s just fine. Vocalist President Chaos has the perfect mix of anger, apathy and disenchantment, he barks into the mic with enough control as to not let those huge specs fall off his curvy nose. Sean Edge, the pudgy one at the drums, balances out Max’s bass playing. Get Loose is good stuff for the hardcore fan with a case of 80’s nostalgia. It is so fucking refreshing to listen to hardcore played with the old style and without the annoying chugga chugga guitar work and the formulaic breakdowns.  On a side note; three members are Jewish.
