WON JAMES WON

Theorist Attack
(R.A.I.G.)

My friend Igor knows about records. He knows that not only is the music fan looking for an aural experience but is also looking at the end product as a tangible piece of art.  Therefore every time I get a package from him I know I am in for a treat. His release of the sophomore work of the downright demented Won James Won is pretty fucking incredible. You don’t see labels exerting this much effort into a package anymore; basically a small hardcover book with twenty-one pages of text in English and Russian and pictures of everything from teeth, to hearts to reptile skeletons to an octopuss to a chick showing her tits, etc.  In other words, all the necessary ingredients to inform the holder that what’s inside cannot be predicted.  And not even the first, second or third moments of Theorist Attack tell you what lies ahead. This is one of those albums, that very much like the work of a spastic ADD riddled artist manifests itself through pure change, through songs that musically bear no relation within each other.

The first song for instance sounds to me like crappy Japanese pop but one minute into it comes to a halt and adds a sample. Hip hop arrives, delivered in such rapid fire fashion, it might just be that I have no clue what they are saying but who would have thought that this American bred genre could sound so good and appropriate in Russian.  Then some killer black metal ensues and this quintet delivers it so fast indeed that is hard to keep such flattening pace and a few moments later we are back to the hip hop. The rest that follows keeps on venturing into diverging musical paths; from lush pop to ambient rock, from mechanical noise and grinding metal with surging triumphant choruses and industrial technocore to drum and bass with a touch of the gentle melodies of Air. It’s all literally insane, but it also flows.

Won James Won is no ordinary band you see.  Formed by a medley of experienced and established Russian musicians living in either Moscow or St. Petersburg, it is also a creative act of the 'invisible' art community ZveZdaZ, which has also bred other unorthodox bands such as Womba, Mux and Karuzel. No longer consider a mere project Won James Won is now an active band, performing live and incurring into all the passages that a proper band does. Theorist Attack excels because every single song is a unique entity, completely separated from each other they all function as well either isolated or as part of a greater eclectic vision. It’s almost like that A-type co-worker you loath, because every single project he gets his/her hands on you know he is going to get it right.
