WORLD BELOW

Repulsion
(PsycheDOOMelic)

I never expected to hear Ozzy so revitalized ever again. Seriously, I was actually quite sure he was dead and his TV appearances were nothing but holographic Disney produced representations of his once self.  I am even more surprised to see him show up leading a Swedish doom, yet thoroughly dynamic and agile, band. More so, Repulsion is his best work  in ages. Not since his early days with Sabbath has Osbourne been able to hold the bucket of water and throw it to the audience with such enthusiasm. With this new persona  (AKA Mike Danielsson) not only has he been able to re-capture his former musical glory but his voice is actually a little more robust and assured than ever before. Songwise, with World Below he’s been able to find a band that can keep up with his young self. No need to slow the pace just because fucking Bill Ward can’t even hold the sticks anymore.

Repulsion is great, a pretty solid doom record with epic songs. There are only five of those in it, but that’s enough, with most going through several phases and more importantly with real singing (none of that cookie monster growling shit around here) on top, and the now more electric than ever playing of this fellow JP Kjellgren, who picks the solos with the gusto of Chopin and accentuates every slice like Jack Pepin. Check the solo for “731”; great way to bring our expectations back into focus. World Below was formed in 1999 by Kjellgren who spends most of his time in the so-so but rather bland teach thrash/death unit Scar Symmetry and who in the past has also played with Centinex, Carnal Forge and Dellamorte. But World Below is more like it; kind of like Candlemass but with more melodic changes within each song.
