This
band has only been together for about a year and a half. Yet,
their sound is as well-formed and gelled as the bastard marriage
of metal and hardcore that partly spawns it. For a band this
young, is admirable how ambitious they are too. “Crown of
Victory” the crushing opening epic, goes through about three
different stages, each one as melodic and brutal as the previous
one. Yet, it’s got all the necessary ingredients to divulge
their influences and position them within a few miles from the
work of American stars such as As I Lay Dying, or Killswitch
Engage. So yes, World to Ashes aren’t terribly original, but
who’s complaining? Plus, I can’t remember the last time I heard
either of those, so maybe Of What There is to Come will
do me good.
Need I say
more? By now you should know exactly how this German quartet
combo sounds like; frosty vocals, melodic death metal structure,
twin guitar attack, crunchy riffs, bits of extreme hook laden
death metal, etc, etc, etc. In other words, these Bavarians are
heavily influenced by the current wave of American metal bands
who were heavily influenced by At The Gates and a few other
Swedish bands. So sure, World to Ashes is going to have one
bitch of a time trying to stand out. This record surely tells us
that they are, musically speaking, as good as anyone, but the
genre in question is on its way to becoming water under the
bridge so unless these boys bring out the jams, I seriously
doubt they will become a staple of anything. Some of the tracks
are very well-written, “Killing Ourselves” has got some killer
riffage, and the subtle way the band has to simulate the
breakdown is particularly enjoyable. So sincerely, good luck.
