Blackhorned
is a one man black thrash metal band out of Denmark.
Created by Atziluth (or as he is known by his parents
Michael Huhle), this project has been going strong since
2001, year in which he recorded his first demo Satan,
which I’ve come to learn sounded like shit. Like most
one man black metal bands, the discography of
Blackhorned is quite extensive, with no less than one EP
and four full-lengths released in the last six years.
As
Blackhorned’s bio reads, Lost in a Twilight World is his
third full-length and not only is it a step forward but it also
features a more serious and dark sound. And dark it is. Atziluth
doesn’t cut corners. His style is actually far from chaotic. Here,
alternating uber speed, somber and morbid melodies reign and dance with
death and if I were to tell you that this Dane feels influenced
by Sarcofago then you wouldn’t believe it just by listening to
these songs.
The thrash
metal influence is welcomed, because this kind of black metal is
as sloppy as it has to be, but to adhere to the dark aura that
all black metal bands should irradiate, Blackhorned goes into
this entrancing passages. Like the whole wavy mid tempo of
“Lunatic Full Moon Syndrome” which by the way is followed by the
speedy black thrash attack of “Dungeons of Death”.
Blackhorned
isn’t necrotic black metal, nor is it chaotic. And fuck me if I
am making it sound like this sounds like Cradle of Filth. That's
not the case at all. This sounds like Atziluth is taking the high road and after years perfecting his
craft he has found that he no longer cares if he alienates the
kvlt or the underground. He is striving for a sound that balances
well his love for early German thrash as well as all that cool
ass goat worshipping he has always loved. So in these songs he doesn't shy away from a few (very limited) gothic touches of
clean strings, uncheessed our keyboards and / or well-hidden ghostly vocals. But no worries
fans of the beast, the purulent and the satanic, this horned
beast is lo fi enough and Atziluth
knows exactly how much to push and when to pull before losing us
all in a sweeping wave of disappointment.
