BOMBUS
7"
(Self- Released)

Now that these digital times are threatening to stop the growing size of my record collection I am going to start giving preferential coverage to vinyl releases. So to start this new trend, I’ll get to a quickie.

On top of my pile was this 7” by Sweden’s Bombus.  These guys have a really interesting sound. It’s not all out of the ordinary, it’s just their own.  Unsurprisingly, like most Swedish musicians, they have the skills, the talent, and apparently the time and the means, to create something with enough personality to call their own.

To prove that point, the first side comes with a song called “Bring Me the Head of Your Dog”; cowbell crazy, punkified rock and roll guitars, raw vocals give shape to a hybrid not totally unlike a wilder QOTSA or a lighter Melvins.  It’s definitely interesting.

The recording itself is a little on the thin side. It maybe the hiss of the vinyl, but the song itself has enough punch to carry itself without the need of much bass. Man, these Swedish bands are so good.

The B side belongs to a song called “Deep River”. The vocals come from several members and I am digging that. Feffe, the vocalist, is still on top, this time around screaming louder, but the rest echo like maniacs at a distance. It’s a nice arrangement too. It’s a calmer song that peaks with the vocals and bursts in volume and rock and roll guitars towards its speedy end.

Nicely done. This is rock and roll with personality. With clear influences, but enough identity. Definitely, looking forward to hearing more.
