It’s
nice to see that record labels are putting the effort in
releasing albums wrapped in great looking package. The
Foundation The Machine The Ascension, the fourth overall
recording from Boston’s Constants for instance, comes
wrapped in a gorgeous three panel digipack that might be
the envy of most underground labels. Big kudos to the
label The Mylene Sheath for putting the effort where
most labels are turning a blind eye. It serves them
well.
That said, I
must say that the package sometimes compliments the music. In
other words, some bands deserve it. Other bands, like Constants,
need it. Why? Because their ilk of post rock is totally generic,
dull and boring. So they need the package to attract the
audience. And let’s not cheat ourselves, the audience of
Constants is solely the one focused in this rising subgenre.
Because their music never goes astray and is constantly rising
and dropping through limited heaviness, constant cymbal
splashes, ebullient layers of strings and clear guitar notes, I
don’t see anyone else but fans of Mogwai and the likes getting
interest in this.
The album is
divided in three parts. You can tell the separation just by
reading the album’s title. Each phase has four songs, though you
couldn’t tell just by listening to ‘em. We could shuffle this
fucker up and it wouldn’t make a difference. It is all nicely
recorded, presented and nicely executed. It is just so goddamn
boring and dull. Unless of course, you love post rock so much
you are willing to buy into an album that you’ve heard before
but has never looked so good.
