Life’s
not fair, you know. While most bands spend all their
years in existence trying to write one good song and a
not so sizeable portion of others manage to do so and
live off it, others, like Droids Attack, make it seem so
easy and write whole albums of high quality chutzpah and
high energy music. What’s more infuriating, they make it
seem like a joke. A good joke. I mean, they have a song
called “The Unforgiven 4” for chrissakes! Taking a look
at the digipack you can tell these droids aren’t about
getting deep and making you think sad thoughts. Yeah,
they may be dressed as soldiers in the second world war
but that robot mascot – named Robo – is beyond cute and
apparently he is an enlisted stoner fanatic too.
Must Destroy follows in their tradition of writing great
‘punk
metal’ as they self describe their style. All Your Chicks Are
Belong to Us, their 2001 demo later released as a full-length in
2004 by Crustacean, earned them a MAMA award (Madison Area
Music Award). Whether we should take that as an incentive to
worship Droids Attack, we should immediate get back to their
back catalogue or we should care at all I don’t know, but all I
can do is highly recommend this new record. If you are slightly
discouraged by the punk metal tag, well don’t be. Punk in this
case is nothing but the attitude. Musically, this is boogie stoner..or something like that.
In attitude,
energy, balls, drive, vocals and production Must Destroy reminds
me of one of my favorite albums of all time; Innocents by Only
Living Witness. Think the Bostonites, only on 45 RPMs’. The
main difference is that this one is jam packed with songs that
move at a much faster pace and when not, they jam – like the
title track – aimlessly but with a contagious joie de vivre.
Double and even triple kudos to vocalist guitarist Brad Van, the
man has that rough and ready everyman voice that is pretty akin
to OLW’s Jonah Jenkins.
Droids
Attack are on their own though and this album is a step in the
right direction for anyone who is willing to embrace its rock
and roll roots and water them with punk attitude. There is a
southern fried flavor that emanates from these riffs and that
showers these songs with sleaze and a bit of that 70’s coked up
vibe. As a whole, Must Destroy is stellar, from beginning to end
– the sequencing is flawless – this is one hell of a record.
