If
I wasn’t holding the CD here in my hands and reading the
liner notes I would definitely bet my savings account
that this was a recording that dated back to the mid to
late 80’s. But checking back on Forca Macabra’s history
I am not all that surprised. As we all metalheads know,
in some parts of South America times stopped when
Beneath the Remains was released.
It makes
perfect sense when you realize that Forca Macabra were
formed in 1991 and that they haven’t stopped touring and
recording relentlessly. Aqui e o Inferno is only the
latest in a string of recordings that includes all sorts
of outings (from demos, to compilations, splits and
full-lengths) in over one dozen record labels.
Aqui o e
Inferno is a record of pristine old school metal. Yeah, yeah.
It’s tempos are so locked and the beats are so steady that the
crust influence is more than obvious and “O Chamando Dos
Esqueletos” is hardcore punk as fuck, but passing those
details, Forca Macabra sounds like the perfect opening act to
Sepultura’s Bestial Devastation tour.
In that sense, Forca Macabra sound frozen in time, preserved for
all the youngsters to see how it used to be done. There is no
evolution here, nary a hint of technique. Just gutsy death
thrash that’s as universal as Kreator’s Pleasure to Kill riffs
or early Ratos de Porao. Really, the most modern aspect of this
recording is that it comes in CD format.
One thing
that can’t be denied about Aqui e o Inferno is that it shows a
spirited performance that is so enthusiastic, these garotos
forget how to hit the right notes. The solos are a fucking
delicacy, with each one coming sloppier than the next. It's
almost like the guitarist is fucking up on purpose. When was
the last time you heard a solo that skips as many notes as the
one in “Massacre do Odio”? In a live setting that's right!
Aqui e o Inferno is the rare album that
captures a band in its natural state. Crude and rude and without
much polishing and sheen, the guitars dish out the riffs in fast
and furious fashion while the vocals of Taurus spill the typical
South American vitriol. This sounds just about right.
