It
almost feels like The Sleep of Morbid Dreams is
the album this Swedish death metal revival needed to
kick it in the ass and turn it into a full blown
phenomenon. Not that that will happen, after all this
is brutal death metal but this album is so good and
massive that if one album was going to spearhead such
explosion it would be this one. The Sleep of Morbid
Dreams could also make us forget about the ‘Swedish’
part because it comes from the land of The Boss.
Yes, New Jersey.
The Sleep
of Morbid Dreams sounds huge, not only because of the
brilliant production job by Don Fury (he is a legend and has
done tons of work for hardcore legends such as Gorilla Biscuits
and Agnostic Front) but the execution is flawless, gutsy,
relentless, merciless and visceral. There is not one iota of
beauty here. Just sheer ugly power. And a visible need and urge
to obliterate every other death metal band on the planet.
Funebrarum sounds hungry, like a vital band at the best of their
abilities pushing through walls and jogging through swamps.
Like a growing beast with the appetite of ten carnivore
elephants. Frankly, this album crushes even newer efforts from
veterans of the scene (I won’t name any) and makes them look
like helpless little girls, yelling and screaming, ‘help,
momma, help, pleaaase! Funebrarum are scaring me!!!!’
Pussies!
This is the
second full-length for Funebrarum, a band that’s comprised of
veterans who have done time in bands as diverse as Evoken and
Assuck. The sound of Funebrarum is totally unlike either though.
The Swedish feel is here and smeared all over, almost as if it
had been recorded in Gothenburg back in the very early 90’s and
re-mastered by God in 2010.
The songs
are relentless, like panzers rolling over your stomach, then
backing up for a double take and moving forward again. Cruelty
made metal sound. From the slow start of “Perish Beneath” with
its dual guitars bashing and weaving, to its almost D-Beat tempo
and uber brutal guttural vocals of Daryl Kahan (his approach is
so bestial he sounds like a pedophilic shit monster) Funebrarum
forge ahead with admirable muscle. For every steady death metal
beat there are equal measures of creepily melodic slowed down
tempo passages. There are only seven songs here, but I assure
you, they will leave your ears feeling like they just got
drilled by Peter North’s pecker.
“Cursed
Eternity” is the middle point and it’s masterful. A slow start
evoking impending doom, there is melody, but not of the good
kind. The Sleep of Morbid Dreams is an album of cursed
sounds. The mid tempo short riff of “Incineration of Mortal
Flesh” embodies death and roll at its most basic. Had Entombed
developed the idea to a cool point it would have sounded
something like this. No worries for those allergic of the
‘roll’ part. The song quickly turns to demolishing speed.
This album
is that strange instance when it all comes together and
brutality sounds oh, so harmonious.
