IMPETUOUS RITUAL
Relentless Execution of Ceremonial Excrescence
(Profound Lore)

Like Portal's, with whom Impetuous Ritual share two members, the music in this album pretends to eviscerate death metal. It turns it inside out and exposes its entrails, it shoots it in the head and licks the bloody wounds.  Then, it fucks it through the bullet hole. The revelation – the music that we get here - is far uglier and more disturbing than what we’ve come to know and love as death metal. There is no point of comparison, I know, but Impetuous Ritual makes one of those silly deathcore bands sound as devastating as UB40. Listening to the mouthful of Relentless Execution of Ceremonial Excrescence is realizing that death metal has been a complacent genre for far too long.

Well, no more.   I was fascinated by Portal and I am thrilled by this album. Like nearly all metal albums this one is based around riffs, right? Yeah, but the six strings have not been used in such a subliminal and abusive mode since…well the last Portal album. If there is a major difference between the sound of both is that while the latter was all warped and coiling riffs, this one presents more of a wall of sound, with insane sounding chords that crash and burn, and then they keep on burning until they turn into a ball of fire that spews molten metal.  The atonal quality remains. There is nothing here that one could prudently tag of being a ‘melody’. If anything, maybe these Aussies wrote a melody and then they played them backwards.

The drums are another point to highlight.  When the skins aren’t being beaten mercilessly at a horrifying doom pace, they are sped up to proper and not so proper death metal patterns. Kinda. Impetuous Ritual is a bulldozer either way. One that in slow instances recalls the abysmal spaces of Disembowelment – notes are left hanging out to dry only to suddenly be rolled up like the long sleeves of a chef at work – and that in the faster moments simply vanishes all traces of normalcy.  The vocals are equally brutal. Incredibly deep bowel movements that have been caught right at the moment of execration. Spare notes are hit higher here and there and there, but that’s it. When the beast is out, the beast being Impetuous Ritual, you better recognize. This is death metal of death.
