MR. DEATH
Detached From Life
(Agonia)

They say that it takes one to know one. And nowhere is this more true than in the debut album of Mr. Death. This is a new band comprised by two Tiamat members and that also includes people who have been active in lesser known bands such as Septic Grave, Oceanlift and Disgression Assassins. Swedish old schoolers they are, so in Detached From Life the quintet follows the Swedish death metal template to perfection. The album was recorded where else but at famed Sunlight Studios and was produced by Tomas Skogsberg, the same man that helped create the gritty sound of early releases by Dismember, Carnage, Grave and Grotesque.

It is no surprise then to find that this is a fully realized album. If those classics Swedish death metal albums brimmed with enthusiasm and chutzpah, Detached From Life enjoys the advantage of having been crafted by seasoned professionals. This plays no part in the directness of the songs. Musically speaking, there is nothing more complicated about this than there is about Like an Ever Flowing Stream. Mr. Death add no technicality and go for the same gutsy feeling. Openers “Suffer” and “Fin” are perfect examples; the former goes so fast it takes an expert to be steady at such speed while the latter is a city leveling track comprised of demolishing riffs and merciless ear battering drums.

It is with much satisfaction then that I say ‘there is nothing here that hasn’t been done before’. Especially in this day and age, when a whole new generation is looking back for inspiration and coming up with material that often is nothing besides subpar rehash, Mr Death proves that you can up the ante and still sound totally authentic. It’s all in the songs.
