I
haven’t heard drums sounding this hollow in like a
decade. Not a good thing. It does sound like kit boy
Mlody got stuck in an alley and had to put up with banging a
trashcan. And that’s just the start of it all. His kick
drum sounds a OK, so perhaps some quality control would
have helped not only his performance, but this whole
introductory work. But that’s just the start in a line
of problems with this recording.
Pass the
Gate of Pleroma is a hideous sounding aberrance. But that’s the
half of it. The other half, the death metal half, is ok. So if
you can put up with a half-cooked stew or uncooked pork, you
might give this band a taste. Pleroms Gate is, in my ears, trying
too hard to be too many things.
In an
attempt to be totally objective I must say that I am not a big
fan of folk metal. In fact, I freaking hate the sub genre. I
think it is cheesy and it makes me think of Riverdance, which
very much like the music of this Polish band, I consider to be
an aberrance. Answers.com describes ‘aberrance’ as the
condition of being abnormal, which frankly, seems to be the norm
in the metal scene. But this concept just doesn’t fly here. In
fact, it jumps and occasionally crashes horribly. Like in “Ipsos”,
the song is played flawlessly but it mixes in that folksy flavor
that incites you to dance like a drunken moron. It sucks.
There seems
to be too much going on in Pass the Gate of Pleroma. Or rather,
from time to time this band seems to be trying too damn hard. In
the song “Skinwalkers”, the music seems to have gone awry. Shit,
just got out of hand. Not only is the drumming super sloppy, but
the riffs are poorly written and sustained by the blast beat
drumming, the result is beyond awkward.
And the EP intro is even
worse; “The Great Panspermia” starts off with the vocalist
speaking in eloquent macho and deep voice something about…who
cares? The whole first song is just as hectic. A synthesizer
outweighs the guitars and even the drums. It sounds like cheesy
orchestrated black metal.
When Pleroms
Gate concentrate in death metal they do ok though. That’s not
most of the time, but hey that’s how these Polish men like it.
“Dead Shall Rise” is a killer death metal tune. Killer riff.
Awesome speed. Pure brutality. Oh, wait, that’s a Terrorizer
cover. Nevermind.
