As
a Decibel subscriber I don’t consider this book
essential reading. I’ve already read all the contents of
Precious Metal. In some cases, I’ve read them a couple
of times. Why? Because these articles are an absorbing
reading to anyone interested in the extreme music
scene. Still, Precious Metal is a great read. It’s
informative like no other. It is also funny like few.
As soon as I got my copy of Precious Metal I was
consumed by it. I couldn’t put it down. Literally. After
all, these are the inside stories behind every single
album that meant something in the last three decades.
As an incentive
to buyers some of the articles/features have been extended. But
I really couldn’t tell you which. That’s probably one of my
issues with Precious Metal. I really did not notice any of the
extra material added on for the book. Sure, a few of the pieces
are noticeably longer (Opeth), but others, I have my doubts.
Also, since my copy of the book was the paperback, there are no
extra images added to the articles. Each feature is just
introduced with a small pic of the band and of the cover
artwork, which since it is paperback, is in black and white.
Regardless, Precious Metal is a great addition to any extreme
music fanatic. It’s a bunch of trivia. It’s almost like reading
an anthology of gossip about metal and hardcore. And it is damn
great.
So, if you want

up with the artwork for Paradise Lost’s Gothic? Was
Napalm Death’s Scum just noise? Read Precious Metal. Is
Opeth the most boring fucking band in the world? And is
Messhuggah overrated? Read Precious Metal. Want to know how many
joints were rolled during the recording of Kyuss’ Sky Valley
and why does Brant Bjork dislikes Scott Reeder? You know what to
do. How fucked up were the members of Eyehategod? Yes, read this
book. Anyway, I could go on forever. |
