REVENGINE
Plan Your Escape
(Self Released)

There are a lot of things going wrong here. As a matter of fact, every time I try to think of something positive to say about this Finnish band I struggle. And that’s not because of a lack of talent. Based on these songs I actually can’t figure out if there is any. The issue here is that Revengine sounds green, unprepared, maybe even a little bit unrehearsed. Their songs sound hectic and sloppy in all the wrong ways. The music sounds like the stuff of first graders, to a degree, childish and slightly retarded. By the time I got to the fifth song “Die For You” I could barely stomach it. The writing is beyond poor. The connection between instruments is at times awkward, with the drummer presenting one of the most laughable displays of skills ever put to CD. It’s pretty clear that this band is lacking in all fronts, so why even bother?

What’s most aggravating about Plan Your Escape is the melodies. They are accessible, in a very irritating radio friendly way, but they aren’t worked to the extent that they should. In other words, these melodies aren’t slick, they are half assed. Had these songs received better treatment or even been developed to the point of completion they could compete with the shitty and simplistic arrangements of bands like Creed or whoever is booming in radio these days. Yikes, indeed. But instead, the music of Revengine can’t compete with the Christian overtones of anyone because Plan Your Escape is downright amateurish. This is a clear example of the band that jumped to the studio way ahead of its time.

And what about the vocals?  Guitarist vocalist Antti Jokiranta has an everyman voice. Not bad really, just very ordinary and mundane, but there are other voices too. One in particular is quite annoying. It’s present in the first song “Given It All” and sounds like someone is actually mocking the band by repeating lines like ‘try to make it last’ in this utterly retarded inward voice.  The lyrics have some clear Christian overtones. My opinion is they should ask the Lord or Jesus or whoever to give them a hand. They need it bad.
