This could be so good. And despite all that has maybe purposely done to prevent that from happening, it is almost there. It is that good. Yes. Sheeep rocks. Now, if only I could listen to it without thinking of its potential, instead of what has been realized here, then we’d all be in a much better place.
There are instances when lo fi, or raw recordings help the material. The approach gives the music certain charm. It is hard to pinpoint when it works, but it happens in black metal quite often, when the purity of a recording matches the intensity of a visceral aural attack. When the music is grander, more ambitious and could be helped with an approach that matches the almost cinematic dramatism of the music, then maybe it is better to go with a better recording. Now I am not saying that Sheeep make pompous music, but to me, this sounds like range. Good range. And the music almost gets pretty.
I have no clue what the budget was here. Or if there even was one. And I am not asking the good fellas of Sheeep to ring Bob fucking Rock. But I have listened to this cassette time and time again and I have found it to be multi dimensional. Meaning, as simple as the music of Sheeep is, as hard hitting and effective as it is, it is all the right chords that are strummed what makes this up. And they all deserve to be heard in all their small glory.
This California trio pulls some great stuff here. Focusing on both grinding hardcore and slow doomy passages that interruptedly burst through the seams via screams, cascading and splashing cymbals and distortion, Sheep have created quite the beautiful coagulating piece. I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the last of their concerns. If they probably repudiate such adjectives as ‘beautiful’ to be attached to their recordings, but fuck it. To those scared by what has been written in these lines, be afraid not.
There is plenty of brutality here. Fast and spastic tunes that don’t come close to the level of annoyance of say, most of Three One G’s roster. Sheeep make nasty music. They don’t come off as a band just trying to be. I think they are just being. But when they get slow, when they whistle and they let the skeletical echo of the squalid string work bounce through, Sheeep crush. And fuck, I wish I could listen to this in stereo.
