Motorhead’s little siblings comes this fairly and
surprisingly unknown (to me) Chicago trio. The awesomely
titled Defenders of the Filth is Superchrist’s
fifth full-length of original material and boy, does it
pack a wallop. Their discography of plenty includes
three demos, one live album and one EP, the latter also
awesomely titled Fuck Like a Priest Which goes to
show that their recognition in the underground is not a
matter of talent, but of exposure and reach.
Defenders of the Filth certainly merits more than
one listen. If not for their lack of pretension or
originality, for the killer guitar work. It’s just that
everything is clearly laid out here to pave their way
for retro recognition; the old rock and roll energy and
the spirited performance, the old metal riffs (“Stay
Black”) riffage, the flashy solos, the one track punk
mind, the consistently upbeat nature of it all, the
unchangeable drum beat, the funny haha lyrics and the
shameless way in which it’s all told. Even the raspy
voice of Chris Black (also member of half the cool
Chicago bands; Nachtmystium, Dawnbringer, Pharaoh, High
Spirits, etc), who sounds like a younger less damaged
version of Lemmy. To put it in one sentence; Superchrist
are my kind of band; non chalant, in your face, raucous
and energetic.
Did I
mention that the guitars are stellar? Did I say that the guitar
solos shred and that the riffs are blazing displays of classic
metalworks? I got a question, which metal band is better because
of the lack of them? None. That’s right none. So if we go the
opposite way and assign a grade to metal bands based on their
solos Superchrist would be on top of the list. Without the
intent of being blasphemous, if you ever get sick of Motorhead I
recommend Superchrist. I guarantee you the post coital feeling
would be one of exhilaration.
