GO ROX, AN ODE TO THE MINORS
by Greg Weeks
from The Red Chord

It's a cool Spring evening as I enter the ballpark. Everyone's wearing their team's colors and thinking about the dogs and beer they're about to consume. Are there fireworks tonight? Is Papelbon closing? Will the Sumo wrestlers be there? In fact there are fireworks tonight, Papelbon is closing and the Sumo wrestlers are of course present. I am in a ballpark in Massachusetts but it is not Fenway. It is Campanelli

Stadium in beautiful Brockton Mass. I am gearing up for a bout between Brockton's Rox and the Worcester Tornadoes. Brockton is a mere stones throw from me so whenever I get the chance I head on over to the City of Champions to watch America's past time. While I try to make it to as many Sox games as I can, the Rox are way cheaper and have amazing between inning entertainment such as jousts between game goers, kids running the bases against our mascot K.O. the Kangaroo and the aforementioned Sumo wrestlers. It may sound family friendly but that's because it is.

Don't be fooled though, it's still Massachusetts so there'll be at least a handful of belligerent drunks swearing and taunting the players. On this particular night the heckler was to the left of my wife and I and he was mumbling expletives to both teams as they tried to hit. Also, as one of our mascots tried to enter the field through the away team's dugout he was grabbed by a team member which almost led to an altercation. Having never seen a grown man dressed up in a suit shaped like the sun fight a guy in a baseball uniform, I kind of wish it had.

Josh Papelbon, brother of Boston's own closer, came out to fire off the last pitches in the game bringing the Rox to victory. Don't get me wrong, nothing beats the excitement and hustle and bustle of Yawkey way and Lansdowne during a Sox game but I love baseball and hot dogs. Both are super cheap in the minors so if you love baseball I urge you to attend some minor league games this year. At the time of this writing the Brockton Rox are in second place 5.5 games behind the Quebec Capitales.

Good luck and have a great summer!

The Red Chord is on tour now with Decapitated and The Summer Slaughter 2010.
