WHITE MICE
Ganjahovadose
(20 Buck Spin)

Because I love the fuzz I love this fucked up slab of metallic noise. Were my ears no accostumed to being violated like this, I wouldn’t stand a chance against this album. Because that’s what happens when you listen to Ganjahovahdose, you actually have to fight it. You won’t beat it. No way. The point is you can’t rest in bed while listening to it. You can’t relax to it, nor listen to it on your way to work. This will make you go haywire, it will have you drilling holes on the wall and then introducing your wee wee in them. By the time you are regaled with the acid bath that is “The Ape Caca Lips” your brains will look like the contents of a can of Spam. As a matter of fact, Ganjahovahdose will probably make you a little dumber.

It’s a shame, because the album starts off stronger than strong. “PassstheFissst” reminded me of a more noise friendly version of the loudest garage rock records put out by Dead Beat and In the Red Records.  Which is the same thing as saying that past the deafening stridence, the angular spirit and the hectic construction of the music and the musical quality of White Mice is evident. The soul of their sound is intense, the beat is driving and their brains have been burned already. To me, it is not an issue of intensity, which White Mice are a hell of a lot, but of how intense can you be before turning into simply annoying. Which sadly, Ganjahovahdose does here and there.

More is introduced later on. “The Hard On of Edam” sounds like it was written by the Butthole Surfers while on Mars. White Mice add the space factor and for a second the record improves. It is hard to listen to this album and not notice how the production impairs some of its better factors. Musically, the album has a lot to offer. The bass playing is damn flawless with notes that twist and bend like a pretzel. And similar kudos could be delivered to drummer Phallusturd Scrowleak. So it’s more of an issue of ‘the sum of its parts’. The strange pairing of this sludge noise with vocals that could fit in a black metal record make Ganjahovahdose quite the test to endure. And challenging music does not always deal the winning hand.
