WRATH: Aeon of Ruin (Screaming Demon Booger Gun Game)

Kind of like retro thrash, usually a retro-style shooter can get the blood moving quickly. Anyone familiar with the genre can pop off a number of classics, and I won’t waste your time doing that here. What I will waste your time on is WRATH: Aeon of Ruin, a Quake-engine gore blast that will put you back in the 1990s while never forgetting you’re old and decrepit in the 21st century. You’ll be okay with it. I mean it’s brought to you by 3D Realms, so like duh. The adventure takes place in a magical realm or something about Old World evils. It makes sense, but the story is rather convoluted for this type of game so the main question is “do I get to slam monsters and shit in it?” The answer is a respectable yes.

Currently WRATH: Aeon of Ruin features three of five worlds, and is open-ended in how you approach them. Each has a different theme and they’re absolutely beautiful, I must say, with some sick views over cemetery expanses and giant ravines. Weapon variety includes the expected chain gun, but as a “fang spitter” that uses monster teeth for bullets, and the “retcher,” which tosses slow but powerful cysts at enemies to cover them in gross. Basically a booger gun. Screaming, multi-faced creatures, robot mutants, this game has got the style down. But, what makes it more modern is the more diverse play, including a series of “artifacts” that can supercharge your game plan and, honestly, the story is quite cool. WRATH: Aeon of Ruin is far more beautiful to look at than any old 90s shooter, and an immersive experience whether or not you give a crap about the story. There appear to be plans for unveiling new weapons (including a spellbook), and monsters, but in its current build this is game is hella fun. Some have called it too easy, but duh you have difficulty settings for that.
