Wędrowcy~Tułacze~Zbiegi – Berliner Vulkan (Polish Synth Noir)

Wasn’t sure what to expect with this one what with the blue skull hipster thing and the fact that Wędrowcy~Tułacze~Zbiegi (WTZ for short) is listed as, lol, black metal and experimental on some shit sites. I’ve also seen vain attempts at calling this “post-black metal” but you just can’t toss that around any old place. For certain, these guys, well mainly one guy, has produced a wide variety of sounds and the latest, Berliner Vulkan, is Polish post-punk early Goth synthwave perfection so forget trying definitions. Ah, so pleasing to get a release like this among all the metal slop. Coming at an EP level, it confused me at first. I mean what can you expect out of it by just the look?

But after a listen it to started to absorb. The native scent of the vocals and how they accent the music’s emotional qualities without a knowledge of Polish is proof of WZG’s skill; you’ll still feel what it says. The synth work prefers delicacy; creating small, emotional spaces in which the vocals can expand to a masterful level. Berliner Vulkan evokes nighttime city-scapes, a lonely cigarette near a broken Soviet factory, and cold rain running off of electric lights. It places you in a world you’ve probably never seen with its post-punk, posi-punk (read: early Goth) style; a welcome release these days and part of that Eastern European synth tradition that has only really gained recognition due to current fads, though it’s been going strong since the 1970s. Seriously check out the varied career of WZG thus far. They bridge practically everything depressing in Polish noir.
