Perilaxe Occlusion – Raytraces of Death (Rasterized Death Metal or Something)

Don’t be confused by my silly wording above (actually partially lifted directly from the band’s own description). This is not death metal made by computers but rather about computers. Does that confuse you? It should. It makes something like Raytraces of Death sound like a failed experiment. Is this an attempt to push boundaries of “different” by selecting a theme that seems as of yet not dripping in filth? With songs about voronoi diagrams that includes lyrics about the amount of RAM slots available in your existential PC, it would seem as such, and with “critics” saying things like this is the “soundtrack to a terrifying global GPU shortage” it’s set up for thematic failure where the it makes sense to the band, but not really the listener, but let’s delve further into the deep space of the motherboard on this one.

Perilaxe Occlusion is a reference to more computer stuff that you can look up on your own, suffice to say this duet is computer-obsessed. They probably program. They probably repair computers, not for Geek Squad, but for some indie company that actually knows what they’re doing. Does this translate to death metal? It can, definitely, I’ve seen it done. Raytraces of Death showcases this particular band’s attempt at symbolizing computer love through the genre. Deeply echoed vocals command an array of complex passages, sweeping riffs, and layered chaos. Great. But, and here’s the delete button being struck repeatedly, in the end the connection between theme and sound is simply not present. Had you not known this band’s intentions, it would sound like practically any other filthy death metal band. The band’s explanations in at least one interview of how the cover, for example, is a “wireframe of a real 3D model of an iron maiden” and how inside the art is “3D rendering,” but in the end it looks like any demo-level filthy death metal B/W art with corpses and shit. That’s about what the music is, as well; that is, it’s a crush, but just another one.
