Nunslaughter – Red is the Color of Ripping Death (Simple Satanic Death Metal)

Nunslaughter is a band that needs no introduction, and I’m a fool for even wasting your time to write that. With one of the most prolific, and dedicated, discographies of any band in existence, they’ve often been given credit for their total refusal to change anything about their approach since their inception in the 1980s. Consistency has killed many a band, but these guys have always remained an exception to the rule. They just don’t fooking quit Jesus Christ! Was it all worth it? Well somehow, after all these years, they even convinced me. Goddamn it.

I never really liked Nunslaughter. The first release I fully experienced was Hells Unholy Fire (2000) and I pretty much stopped there except for the occasional “what these guys be doin'” check-in. Satan + simplistic riffs = Nunslaughter. Pretty simple. So simple I’m overusing the term. Why? Because it’s Satanic vanilla, that’s why. Simple for the sake of simpler simplicity. Red is the Color of Ripping Death, however, is in my simple opinion the greatest work of these diehard freaks to date. But the simple fact is I really can’t explain why. The approach is largely what it’s always been, the artwork more developed yet the same old Satanic stuff, the vocals the same, etc. Somehow, over all the years these sons-of-bitches have convinced me what they’re doing is legit. Much like an intellectual who eventually turns Christian after decades of ignoring it, somehow Nunslaughter has proven that their vein of Satanic, and simplistic, death metal is probably in need of more attention, if for any reason other than they just won’t cut the shit out.
