Talia (Supernatural Extreme Splatter Smut)

Talia has been on my radar for a little while now. I’ve seen a few horror friends review it, and it’s featured on many people’s bookshelves. But for some reason, I just hadn’t picked it up, until now. And for the most part, I’m happy I did. Split into two parts, Volpe begins telling the tale of how a lovely girl like Talia finds herself in the world of extreme porn. She wanted was to be a star on Broadway, yet found herself in a warehouse cutting off circulation to men’s genitals, and laughing during the process. As the story progresses, the porn gets darker, venturing into the world of snuff. Now, whilst I enjoyed this origin story for Talia in the first part (and the gruesome description was on point throughout), I did find it to be a little too long. The villains and plot would have been clear without this section taking up as much space as it did. There were times I was wondering if this was just the whole story, and if it was was it even worth continuing?

“Sally rubbed the suitcase, his skin hissing over the zipper. “Give me a few minutes. That’s all I ask.” Mike dismissed him with a wave. “Whatever,” he said, “I don’t fucking want to know.” Sally grabbed the handle, preparing to pull again. “No, no you don’t.” He dragged the luggage into the darkness of the Conex box. Mike listened to the night come alive. The sound of the water, the chirp of crickets…the sound of flesh tearing. Grunts and animalistic rutting sounds echoed from the Conex box. Ripping, and tearing of flesh joined the sound of sex. Fuck, tear, chew. Fuck. Tear. Chew.”

Part two completely switched it up, however, and I’m so happy I stuck around. When found in a dire situation, Talia’s story turns into a supernatural, devilish tale. Revenge is her main quest and she manages to do it brutally and without any remorse. Part one was gross and fun to read, but it wasn’t until the end of it that things were different and a little more exciting. The bad guys in the story, Mike and his right-hand man Sally, are horrific, including the latter’s obsession with lead women. Of course, there are people above these two, no crazy violent porn business is complete without there being a whole organization involved, and this makes me think that the second book in this series will go deeper into this rabbit hole. Daniel Volpe does a great job of starting Talia as one thing and turning it in the opposite direction. Especially into a work a lot of people who tend to indulge in extreme horror don’t read, which are things of supernatural/occult. I can’t wait to read the second!
