When Evil Lurks (Bloody Mess Argentine Possession Film)

There’s been a veritable buttload of hype about this When Evil Lurks flick swarming out of Fantastic Fest. Normally, my bullshit detector goes off whenever these dorks go all gushy for the latest dose of grossolalia. Well, I’ve never been happier to eat some crow than now because When Evil Lurks is not just the best horror film of the year, it may be one of the best films of the year hands down. In a rural town, two brothers discover a sick man whose condition indicates a certain amount of demonic possession. By the looks of it, he is about to give birth to the epitome of absolute evil. After careful consideration and hand-wringing, the town decides that the best thing to do is get rid of the ailing patient. Unbeknownst to them, the stage is set for something even worse…

When Evil Lurks is the rarest thing in genre cinema these days: a true original. There’s nothing derivative in the storyline or plot nor does the film invoke any familiar tropes. This is just a good, straight up scary story that also has some genuinely disgusting and shocking moments. In short, this is what viewers like me have been waiting for. When Evil Lurks debuts on Shudder in time for Halloween but was deemed good enough to receive a limited theatrical run. That decision should be rewarded as I can’t imagine any horror fan not absolutely falling in love with this one. Top 10 of the Year, easily.
