So says Catalonia’s L’Espectre Que Alimenta La Flama Dels Ancestres (damn, super long), who summon up the spirits of their ancestors in an effort to create epic, dark dungeon synth with their debut, Funesta Epifania. Clashing swords in the dark mountains with the sun behind them, can this duo truly captivate our senses into accepting their particular approach to such things? Can they craft tales of forgotten times and summon ancient evils before our eyes (and ears)? They can! Crown this reawakened, undead emperor now! L’Espectre Que Alimenta La Flama Dels Ancestres is the future of the past!
It annoys the piss out of me that I had to use an Instagram reel to embed into the review here, but whatever, we’ll deal with it. This is probably the kind of thing you need to first experience alone in a cave, anyway, and a few seconds isn’t going to cut it, from any source (Bandcamp preferred). Though it amounts to a mere three tracks, Funesta Epifania is completely epic in its breadth. The first track alone goes beyond twenty minutes, and L’Espectre Que Alimenta La Flama Dels Ancestres is here not to play music, but to craft mythological emanations of the metaphysical variety (yes, deep). A strong feature of is the storytelling aspect. Utilizing eerie, primitive electronica, pianoforte (we’ll go with that spelling for effect), and impish vocals, the crafting is done from experience. Flowing like an ancient text in their native Catalan tongue, L’Espectre Que Alimenta La Flama Dels Ancestres give a much needed creative edge to a genre that, much like dark ambient, is frequently populated by any random fool with a Casio. Take some time, think, and create! Become the spirit of your ancient ancestors! There is something to be learned here.
