Dungeon Crawl – Maze Controller (D&D Death Thrash)

This shit’s goddamn genius. Now that we’ve started with that, I have to keep it going so you understand. Can’t just jump into a campaign without some backstory. I’ve seen lost of fantasy themes tossed around in metal, especially the power variety, but few bands can give it any sort of real substance. Imagine my surprise when I got this one and learned it was actually death thrash entirely focused on Dungeons & Dragons (probably 5e). Lol wut? But I knew, just by looking at the band photos in the promo, I knew these guys get it. This isn’t just a “get it” in the sense of nerd culture, these guys get everything to have created something as perfect as Maze Controller.
Next fact, I rarely give out a perfect score, but here’s a time when I couldn’t not. Dungeon Crawl craft excellent thrash with sick solos presented with such clarity it couldn’t be anything but a natural 20 all around. Perfect 18 rolls on 3d6 with bonus stats. The death elements, solid as well, with +5 to charisma, minimum. So yeah, those parts are solid for sure, but where Dungeon Crawl takes this to the next level of the labyrinth without needing to level is the presentation. With songs like “+1 Mace” (lol), interludes that verge into beautiful dungeon synth, a somewhat sarcastic approach to their own existence, tabletop knowledge, and vocals screeching like a PC running an anti-paladin with shadow virus who rolls nothing but perfect 100s, Maze Controller demands of itself a new genre and absolute DM status.
