Gorgerin – S/T (Back Alley Autopsy Goregrind)
Figured since I got another good one to review this week, instead of trimming down the chaff to get to the usual two, I’d do three, and Canada’s Gorgerin were just the right amount of disgust to drive away anyone who recently came to the site. We keep it real underground here, to the point that these guys have scarcely any presence online and their social media stamp is censored and barely visible. I strive to be barely visible, with barely any comments, and only whispers of my name in the electronic aether. The artwork of this debut is probably part of the reason, yes? After that comes the sound, so if you’re on here listening stay the hell away.
Playing that type of deathgrind and/or goregrind exemplified by anatomically obsessed bands from the early period of death metal up through the late 1990s, and with a heavy dose of reality, comes Gorgerin. If I have to state one fault it’s that you’ve definitely heard this stuff before. It’s grimy, guttural, never heavily relying on effects, and thus keeping it real, by which I mean really disgusting. There are a number of bands of this type, but Gorgerin are one of the few to get the sound right. It’s just enough low level production without becoming a passable demo, and it keeps the sounds varied enough that you’ll notice it more than others. With its multi-layered vocals that sound like an unclean slaughterhouse, late 1980s grind atmosphere, occasional samples to lessen your humanity, and horrid art by Strange Creature Collages (who else?), this S/T is just what the back alley doctor ordered for autopsy.
