Trollcave – Adoration of the Abyssal Trespasser (Odious Funeral Death Doom)

I love when bands do shit like this. Calling this an EP when it’s over the standard time limit, lol. And making it only two tracks so at first glance you’d think you were looking at a new 7″ drop. Spain’s Trollcave came under my radar somewhere in the past, I don’t remember when, and I don’t remember why I waited until their latest, Adoration of the Abyssal Trespasser, to give them a few moments of glory. Coming from the Gothic coast of Spain known as Catalonia, it does indeed appear that something is pulling itself out of the crypts there, dragging with it a horrid sound that would serve best as background music to the Second Inquisition (not the vampire one).
There’s an odious depth to the two cuts you get here. Adoration of the Abyssal Trespasser manages to fit a wealth of funeral, death, and doom inside its oratorical atmosphere. One can imagine a decrepit priest with mouldered robes opening a cast-away work of apocrypha written in a dead language. I often like to use terminology like “rot” and “filth” when I write these short reviews, but I actually feel it for here, it’s not merely to create an impression. With their variety of effects, spacious echoes in particular, gurgling vocals, and enshrouded tones, Trollcave lingers and sticks to the skin like a pasty, malodorous rot. With some moments of truly unusual atmosphere, rife with dread, the experience is nightmarish, and often unexpected.
