Shrieking Demons – The Festering Dwellers (Metaphysical Death Metal)

 

I’ve got to keep giving it to Transcending Obscurity. Guy always drops albums from bands pushing the envelope way past the norm. Though I may only review his stuff here and there, that’s really a standard of greatness I apply to everything. As I always say, if you see it here, you know it’s the best out of the current mix. But when one of his bands hits, they hit hard. And I’m all over that high-quality merch, like them gym shorts I still rock that I bought like two years ago and can’t even remember what band it is. I think I have another purchase in coming for some of that with Italy’s Shrieking Demons standing as proof of concept of Transcending Obscurity’s approach, with their latest, and debut full-length, The Festering Dwellers.

   

Living amongst ivy-covered ruins, Shrieking Demons are true to their moniker in more than just title. What needs to be recognized is their usage of traditional death metal in a metaphysical sense. Instead of taking a more typical approach with technical elements and/or the so-called “brutal,” this quintet (or is it a trio?) is all about the delivery. It’s how the sound is presented instead of what is presented, pulling from years of tradition with a vehemence even older bands lack these days. This, somehow, leads to a track set both confrontational and invigorating, challenging traditional norms without experimenting for the hell of it. With their arcane riff action, excellent sense of groove, and, yes, of course, shrieking, The Festering Dwellers should prove difficult to top in the band’s, hopefully, near future.
